Gynecomastia

OVERVIEW

Gynecomastia is abnormal breast development in men. Male breasts are rarely discussed openly, yet estimates show that 40 to 60 percent of men struggle with this condition (known as gynecomastia) at some point during their lives. The good news is that there is an effective solution to persistent gynecomastia: cosmetic surgery.

While it is usually self-limiting (related to temporary hormone influences such as during pre-puberty), in some cases, it may persist. Dr. Edgar Sosa specializes in Gynecomastia surgery to help male patients regain their confidence and provides each patient with the highest-quality care and the newest technology. His patients experience barely-visible scars and natural-looking results. Dr. Edgar Sosa has successfully treated men at Orlando Plastic Surgery Associates in the Greater Central Florida area.

Gynecomastia is also associated with a number of endocrinology abnormalities and include additional symptoms. In young males, endocrine evaluations may be recommended, but in older males, unless there is history of other endocrine related symptoms, this is usually of no benefit. Breast enlargement can also be related to certain types of medications or drugs.provides each patient with the highest-quality care and the newest technology. OPTIONS

The treatment of gynecomastia is a subcutaneous mastectomy (removal of breast tissue). This is performed under general anesthesia as outpatient surgery. An incision is made under the nipple and areolar complex and the excess breast tissue is removed.

During your consultation, Dr. Edgar Sosa, will discuss what the best option for the outcome you would like to obtain.

RECOVERY

Gynecomastia surgery will be performed at an outpatient surgical center. After you recover from surgery, you will be discharged home with instruction. You will be sent home with pain medication, care instructions, and a compression garment to reduce fluid retention and swelling and support the breasts.

After gynecomastia surgery, you will have a tender chest as well as soreness. Swelling is also expected and will take a few weeks to improve. You must also wear the compression garment during this six week period as directed.

Many patients are able to return to work after 2 to 3 weeks and return to full activities after four to six weeks.

Dr. Edgar Sosa will continue postoperative care in the weeks following your surgery to ensure proper healing and satisfactory results.jogging, soccer, football, etc.).
