May is Melanoma awareness month, and everyone at Orlando Plastic Surgery would like to help you take the steps necessary to prevent skin cancer. There are many ways you and your family can be proactive about preventing skin cancer like melanoma. Read on to learn more.
Melanoma is one of the most common forms of cancer diagnosed in the United States. Unfortunately, it is also one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer, with cases only rising in the past years.
The good news is that if Melanoma is caught early, it is highly curable. This is why taking steps to identify it early, and prevent it altogether, are so important.
Tips to Prevent Melanoma
There are many ways that you can prevent Melanoma from ever occurring in the first place. One of the biggest factors that can make Melanoma worse is UV rays. Because of this, both men and women should apply full spectrum sunscreen daily and wear protective clothing or hats, even if it is not particularly sunny. Also, individuals should avoid using tanning beds, as they increase the risk of melanoma by a whopping 75%.
Patients should also take the time to check their skin monthly. Simply taking the time to examine your body for suspicious looking or changing moles or lesions could help to save your life. A skin check can also be done by your dermatologist or family physician.
The ABCDE’s of Skin of Melanoma
A great way to stay on top of changes in lesions is by looking for the ABCDE’s of Melanoma. These include:
Asymmetrical- look for growths that are asymmetrical or uneven.
Border- be aware of growths with irregular borders.
Color- check for moles with multiple colors.
Diameter- check the size of your mole- is it larger than the size of a pencil eraser?
Evolved- be aware of the size of your growth, and if it has gotten bigger.
If you find any of these signs in your moles or lesions, you should visit a doctor ASAP to have it checked out.
By following these simple steps, you could prevent skin cancer or melanoma, or even find it early enough to cure it.
