What You Need to Know About Radiesse®
Radiesse® dermal filler is setting a new standard for facial contouring and augmentation. It immediately adds volume to safely contour, correct, and beautify facial features. And it continues to work over time. It has patented microsphere technology and stimulates the body to produce new collagen for a soft, natural look that lasts.
Radiesse® dermal filler is made of unique, patented, calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier. When injected into the skin, these microspheres initially perform as a filler and they immediately provide facial volume for a soft, natural look. The transformation is noticeable right away. Over time, your body will gradually absorb the gel carrier, but the very tiny, smooth microspheres remain.
While many people think of aging as merely getting wrinkles, it is also commonly associated with the loss of volume in the face. Skin loses collagen and elasticity as we age. Facial features once accentuated by fullness can become marked by more severe contours and thin skin. Dr. Johnston is able to help these patients by adding youthful volume to the face. Fillers are an ideal way of achieving the desired result. The procedure can be performed with minimal to no downtime and without the expense associated with surgery.
Radiesse® can also correct volume loss in the back of the hands. It is the first and only FDA-approved formula for hand augmentation while providing rejuvenating, natural-looking results. After treatment, results should be seen immediately and last up to one year. The number of treatments and results will vary for each patient based on the condition of their hands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Radiesse®
Q. How long will it last?
A. Results may last up to a year or more in many patients, which may result in fewer office visits for your next treatment. Individual results may vary, depending on age, skin type, lifestyle, and metabolic rate, so be sure to discuss your expectations with Dr. Johnston.
Q. Where can it be used?
A. Radiesse® is popular in the nasolabial folds or smile lines, and used to simply enhance or sculpt the overall shape of the face by filling hollowed or flat cheeks. It can also be used to treat the cheek or jowels to fill in and plump out tissue that is showing signs of the aging process.
Q. How long does the procedure take?
A. Approximately 20 minutes, start to finish.
Q. How soon will I see results?
A. You’ll see results immediately after treatment.
Q. Is there any downtime associated?
A. After treatment and within the first 24 hours, you should avoid strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure and alcoholic beverages. Exposure to any of these may cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection sites. It is important to avoid any strenuous rubbing of the injection site and to gently wash your face with a mild or gentle soap. Many patients return to their normal routine or activities immediately, but if you are unsure, please check with Dr. Johnston for his recommendation.
Q. Will there be any swelling or bruising?
A. You do run the risk of slight bruising at the injection site; we recommend that you discontinue the use of non-prescription blood thinners before and after injection. There may also be some mild swelling that can last two to seven days. You may apply an ice pack or cold compress to the injection area after treatment to help reduce swelling, which should last only a few days.
Q. How much do I need?
A. Everyone is different; the doctor will help determine how much product is necessary to achieve your desired results.
Q. Is there a possibility of an adverse reaction?
A. There is a less than one percent chance of an adverse reaction. Hyaluronic acid is a substance already found in the human body, which greatly reduces the risk of rejection.
Q. Will it hurt?
A. Most patients opt for a local anesthetic to avoid any discomfort.
Q. Is it reversible?
A. Yes. There is an agent that can be injected to dissolve hyaluronic acid facial filler products.
Q. How will I look when the product dissolves?
A. You will look the same as you did before you had the injections.
Q. Can I wear makeup after my injection?
A. Makeup and your normal skin care products can be applied. Apply makeup gently, avoiding strenuous rubbing of the injection area.
