Those who wish to change the appearance of their ears may choose to undergo an ear surgery. These procedures can alter the shape of the ears, providing for better symmetry and balance of the face. Orlando Plastic Surgery Associates offers otoplasty procedures for those in Orlando, Lake Mary, and all throughout Orange County.
What is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?
Otoplasty can correct ear conditions such as protruding ears, abnormally large ear lobes, lop ear (in which the tip folds down and bends forward), and shell ear (in which certain features of a normal ear are missing). This procedure is known to greatly improve self-confidence, especially in young children or teens.
Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in the Orlando Area?
If your ears prominently stick out, you may be able to benefit from ear surgery. This procedure can also correct ears that have been negatively impacted by injury. Ideal candidates are individuals whose ears have reached near full size (around ages six to eight), and who are in good health. Because there are many operations for the many different types of ear deformities, surgery can be relatively simple or more involved. Each patient’s circumstances require analysis by Dr. Sosa and Dr. Johnston for reconstruction.
Most health insurance companies cover Otoplasty surgery in Orlando and Lake Mary if it solves a functional problem, such as hearing impairment, or to correct a deformity or congenital abnormality. However, if the procedure is being done for cosmetic reasons only, it may not be covered by your health insurance provider. Speak with your insurance provider for a full explanation on coverage.
What Can I Expect From Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?
Surgery lasts about two to three hours, depending on how complex the procedure for your case is. It may take longer than three hours if the procedure you need is very involved. During your consultation, you can ask Dr. Sosa and Dr. Johnston for details about what your case requires. The most complex procedures are usually done in stages. The most common procedure, setback otoplasty, is generally a single stage, out-patient procedure with life-long enjoyment of results.
If you are an adult, Dr. Sosa and Dr. Johnston probably will use local anesthesia with a sedative. A child will likely receive general anesthesia (be put to sleep) to ensure that he or she cannot move around during the operation.
The day of your procedure, dress comfortably, and wear a collarless shirt that you do not have to pull over your head.
How Long is the Recovery From Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?
You should plan to stay home at least one week after the surgery. Children should stay home from school for at least one week. During recovery, it is advised that you keep your head elevated, and avoid resting directly on the operated ear.
Your head will be bandaged before you are sent home. You will probably wear the bandage for three days, and Dr. Sosa and Dr. Johnston may provide you with a headband-type dressing, which you may have to wear for up to three weeks to promote proper healing.
